Chapter 72 Sneaking Back to the Base
Chapter 72 Sneaking Back to the Base
Zhang Hao had a lot of complaints about Wang Qiang, the commander of the G City security base. He had originally planned to lead a small team to infiltrate the base and see what was going on inside. After all, some small countries' governments were in chaos, and he needed to find out if Wang Qiang really had ulterior motives. Unexpectedly, Pei Sihao and his team also wanted to infiltrate the base to find someone. What a coincidence!
The reason Zhang Hao came early in the morning to persuade the people in this villa to go to the Huaxi Base was because he saw that they had weapons last night. He could let them escort such a large group of survivors to the Huaxi Base with his squad. He only needed to leave a few elite soldiers to infiltrate the G City Base with him to investigate the situation before rushing to meet up with the main force.
Pei Sihao and his team now have five people, and they will likely be mobilized as a group. So, he only needs to go alone. The other soldiers and the deputy captain can take the survivors and leave, returning to the Huaxi base.
"I'll go with you guys," Zhang Hao told Pei Sihao and the others, explaining his plan.
Pei Sihao and the others did not refuse, after all, it was something that others should confirm. Moreover, according to Gu Nanfeng's guess, if Qin Yuan and Lin Yun returned but did not come to find them, they were most likely under the control of the base. But the base was clearly very resistant to these people who were suspected of being infected, so why did it suddenly want to control Qin Yuan and Lin Yun now?
It's unfathomable, completely unfathomable. Even someone as meticulous as Gu Nanfeng couldn't figure it out.
Having not slept all night, but not wanting to delay their search for Qin Yuan and Lin Yun, they decided to catch up on sleep early and sneak back to the base tonight.
With the Huaxi Base soldiers defending the neighborhood, they could finally get some sleep in peace. After agreeing on a departure time for the evening, the group saw Zhang Hao off and immediately went back to their rooms to rest.
At six o'clock in the afternoon, Zhang Hao arrived. He brought Pei Sihao and his team a walkie-talkie, which Pei Sihao complained about and then had the soldier who came with him take it back.
Zhang Hao had already eaten dinner—compressed biscuits—before coming over, but Pei Sihao and the others hadn't eaten yet. After his little soldier left, Pei Sihao tossed him a walkie-talkie from their side and gave him a box of instant rice so he wouldn't drool while watching the five of them eat.
After finishing dinner, around 7 PM, as darkness fell, they decided to drive to the agricultural products market they had previously visited, as per Gu Nanfeng's plan. Lu Yuan and his group had previously changed vehicles there for Du Wenqing's team, leaving the least mobile supply vehicle at the market.
If they come back, even if they plan to eat the batch of modified vehicles provided by Lu Yuan and his group, they won't leave behind the original base's supply vehicles, since vehicles are also important resources in the apocalypse.
Since Zhang Hao was the only one joining, Lu Yuan didn't plan to bring out another car to make a scene. The six of them squeezed into one car and set off. In just over ten minutes, they arrived at the stinking agricultural products market.
Just as Gu Nanfeng had guessed, they circled the market but couldn't find the supply truck.
"Ha, they detained our people and our cars!" Yang Xiao was a little angry. He yelled at Pei Sihao to drive back to the villa area and also asked Zhang Hao to gather six people, saying that they should be prepared to drive all those cars back.
The two vehicles drove towards the G City security base. In an abandoned residential area on the outskirts of the base, they parked the two vehicles, put on the equipment they had prepared, and approached the security base on foot.
When Gu Nanfeng was at the base research institute, he discovered several surveillance loopholes: two in the underground parking garage and three in the defensive wall.
The base's defensive wall is now almost three people high, showing that Wang Qiang has been continuously strengthening the base's security. The surveillance loopholes in the underground parking garage are meaningless for Lu Yuan and his team to infiltrate the base now; they can only sneak in through the defensive wall.
Fortunately, out of the group of 12, there were seven soldiers and one physical education student. Lu Yuan and Yang Xiao, the two guys who were physically weak and dragged the group down, were managed to be hoisted up the defensive wall with military ropes, and the whole group finally managed to infiltrate the base successfully.
Unlike his last visit to the base, Lu Yuan felt that the atmosphere at the entire G City base was off after this infiltration. They infiltrated the base around 9:30 PM, and there was almost no one outside; instead, there were many more patrol teams.
Lu Yuan followed behind Zhang Hao and observed that three different squads had passed by, each with eight people. The squad leaders were all equipped with guns, and the other members also had powerful melee weapons or baseball bats.
“Even if the suspected infected person mutated after the incubation period, there’s no reason to arrange such intensive patrols, right?” Guided by Gu Nanfeng, they found a blind spot in the underground parking garage to hide in. This security base was indeed full of suspicious points.
"I knew this bastard had ulterior motives!" Zhang Hao was so angry he wanted to jump up and down, but he still suppressed his anger and squatted down in place.
"It's strange. Logically speaking, the virus outbreak has only lasted for a little over three months. I heard that he was originally a leader of the municipal party committee. Even if he wasn't firm, he couldn't have been exposed so quickly." When Yang Xiao was at the base, although he didn't make as many friends as Qin Yuan, he still chatted with some of the base's survivors and had a little understanding of the base's leadership.
“There are many reasons why someone might not want to relocate to the South China base, and there’s no need to be so forceful.” Pei Sihao couldn’t understand either. Judging from the various arrangements made by the command headquarters before, Wang Qiang was definitely not an impulsive or brainless person.
“It’s very possible that there are some secrets in the base that even the national government doesn’t know about right now.” Gu Nanfeng suddenly remembered Professor Lin, the virologist who was with Professor Wang.
As the group was whispering, another patrol team passed by. Now was not the time for analysis and conversation. Zhang Hao arranged for some of his soldiers to search for Lu Yuan and his group's luxury cars in the underground parking garage, while he followed Gu Nanfeng and the others to the hospital's inpatient building.
Based on their previous experience at the base, the isolation wards were located on the top floors of the inpatient department. The group of six planned to go there first to take a look. After all, Qin Yuan and Lin Yun were considered suspected infected persons in the base, and it was impossible to let them live with ordinary survivors. They were most likely still trapped in the isolation area.
Climbing so many flights of stairs at once was practically unbearable for Lu Yuan and Yang Xiao, who had only started exercising three months ago. Pei Sihao wasn't much better off, and was mercilessly mocked by Zhang Hao.
What's most infuriating is that after painstakingly climbing to the floor of the isolation ward where they had stayed before, they discovered that it was no longer an isolation ward. As more and more people came to seek refuge at the safe base, these floors had been converted into dormitories for survivors.
"So, are we going to keep going now?" Pei Sihao asked, panting as he leaned on the stairs. He had followed them so quickly up from the underground parking garage to the 22nd floor, and if he were asked to go down immediately now, he might really explode.
"What?" Lu Yuan and Yang Xiao, who were still on the two floors downstairs, were also panting as they leaned on the stairs. Upon hearing Pei Sihao's words, the two of them collapsed onto the floor.
"The hallway isn't very safe. How about we find an empty room to rest for a bit?" Zhang Hao had already checked the two floors above, and there were a few rooms on the top floor that looked like they weren't occupied yet.
“Then we still have to climb the stairs?” Pei Sihao looked up at the stairs in front of him. “I choose to go down now…”
