Chapter 73 Sneaking Back to the Base (2)
The six of them had only gone halfway down the stairs when they heard people talking in the hallway. Fortunately, because Lu Yuan and the other two were so weak that they could barely walk, the six of them moved very slowly and quietly, and thus they were not discovered.
"Everyone was outside on the day of the meteor shower, so why did only a few of them go crazy?" a young male voice said in the hallway.
"Who knows? They all came back from T City, and they went berserk, not zombified. They're not zombies." Another slightly deeper male voice seemed to be defending those people.
"When a person goes mad, what's the difference between them and a zombie?" The security door creaked open, and another man entered, speaking with a local accent.
"What the hell are you saying?" The deep male voice was very dissatisfied with this statement. Lu Yuan and the others on the two floors above could hear him pulling the person and the sound of the fabric rubbing together. "I'm warning you, don't you dare talk nonsense."
"Hmph, don't think you're so great just because you're soldiers. I'm part of the base's guard team now. Commander Wang said that in our base, the guard team is the same as the regular army." With the help of another young man, the man with the accent shook off the man with the heavy voice, spat disdainfully, and left the stairwell. It sounded like he was going downstairs. Lu Yuan breathed a sigh of relief, thankfully he wasn't going upstairs.
"Old Ji, what's wrong with you? Didn't we agree not to argue with these guards?" the young man's voice rang out again.
"I just can't stand these bastards! We were out there working so hard to find supplies, and Lao Du and the others were on such a dangerous mission, and now they're all locked up!" The deep male voice was clearly furious, which made Gu Nanfeng and the others realize that these two men were probably soldiers from the original supply team, and at least knew Du Wenqing.
"Say less. The situation at the base is unclear. I heard that people from the Huaxi base have arrived, but Commander Wang hasn't let anyone in." The young male voice continued, "That Professor Lin locked up both Lao Lin and Lao Qin. I don't know what happened on the way, but why didn't the two of them go crazy?"
"Damn it!" A deep male voice slammed his fist on the wall of the stairwell in anger.
Taking advantage of that moment, Zhang Hao, along with Pei Sihao and Gu Nanfeng, jumped down from the building. Considering that both of them were soldiers, Zhang Hao didn't expect Pei Sihao and Gu Nanfeng to be able to subdue either of them. He simply had them take Yang Xiao's coat and, no matter who they tackled, cover their heads with the coat to prevent them from making a sound.
Luckily, Gu Nanfeng and Pei Sihao successfully subdued the smaller, thinner person, while Zhang Hao, a former special forces soldier, quickly subdued the other person. The other person seemed to have discerned Zhang Hao's military status from his skills and quickly calmed down, no longer resisting.
"You guys..." The young male voice came from the throat of the strong male voice that was being controlled by Zhang Hao, startling Lu Yuan and Yang Xiao who followed behind. The voice and the image were out of sync!
"Young Master Pei?" The strong man saw Pei Sihao, who appeared to be sprawled on the ground but was actually using his elbows to brace against the smaller man on the ground.
At the G City security base, probably more than 80% of the soldiers had seen Pei Sihao when he first arrived at the base. Moreover, because he was different from Lu Yuan and the others, he had the special identity of being the young master of the Pei family in Beijing. Anyone with a good memory should not forget him.
"Hmm?" Pei Sihao turned around and glanced at the burly man. He remembered that this person was the captain of the 0843 supply team. "You are that...?"
"Fei Wen, captain of the 0843 supply team." After the man introduced himself, Zhang Hao released his grip on Fei Wen's hand, and Pei Sihao and Gu Nanfeng also released the other person.
"Holy crap, he..." Before the short guy on the ground could finish speaking, Fei Wen covered his mouth and made a "shh" gesture.
"Zhang Hao, captain of the 0984 search and rescue team at the Huaxi Base." Zhang Hao saluted the two men, and they returned the salute.
The short soldier introduced himself as Ji Yang, the captain of the 0031 supply team. If it weren't for the obvious marks on the back of his hand from hitting the wall earlier, Lu Yuan would never have been able to match the short man with the deep voice.
"You're from the Huaxi Base?" Ji Yang was a little surprised. He had just heard Fei Wen say that someone from the Huaxi Base had come a few days ago, but Wang Qiang hadn't let them in. So how did Zhang Hao from the Huaxi Base get into the base? And with Pei Sihao, Gu Nanfeng, and the others.
"Professor Lin, the virologist, told Commander Wang that more than 80 percent of the people at your Huaxi base had been exposed to virus-laden air during the second wave of virus rain, so Commander Wang didn't let you in. But how did you get in?" Fei Wen asked the question that Ji Yang also wanted to ask.
"I came in with these guys." Zhang Hao didn't hide anything, pointing to the other people. He didn't say anything either; he had indeed come in with these guys.
"Where are Captain Qin and the others being held? Why are they being held? Why have the others gone mad?" Gu Nanfeng asked a series of questions after gathering his thoughts.
"Ah, Lao Qin and the others were with you guys before." Ji Yang suddenly remembered that these people in front of him were the members of the newly formed 0788 team that Qin Yuan and his group had been laughing at Lao Qin and Lao Lin in the dormitory back then, saying that they had gained nothing.
"Yes, it's us. So where exactly are Captain Qin and Captain Lin being held? We have to find them as soon as possible!" Lu Yuan emphasized the timeframe, since they had sneaked in.
"They are..." Ji Yang was about to speak when Fei Wen slapped his arm. But Ji Yang was also an impatient person. He complained to Fei Wen, "What are you doing, Fei? They are here to rescue Lao Qin and the others."
“It’s not that I don’t want you to talk, it’s just that it’s not safe to talk here.” Fei Wen opened the security door and glanced outside. “I’m going to clear out our team’s rooms. You can bring them to my dorm in five minutes.”
After saying that, Fei Wen was about to leave. But before he could even walk out, Zhang Hao stopped him, "Don't bother. It's not safe for us to stay in your dorm. Let's get to the point, we don't have time."
“Okay, they’re in the underground virus lab now.” Fei Wen also realized that Zhang Hao and his group might not trust him, or that they didn’t trust anyone in the entire base.
"An underground virus lab?" Lu Yuan was dumbfounded. He remembered that Professor Lin's virology lab and Professor Wang, Gu Nanfeng's mentor, were both located in a specially planned research institute on the base. How come they've been moved underground?
"As expected, all the places with ill intentions are often in the basement," Pei Sihao remarked.
"How many people are being held there?" Gu Nanfeng continued to ask.
“There are probably less than twenty people,” Ji Yang replied. “Old Du and his men came back at full strength. After the meteor shower, more than a dozen of them went berserk, but they didn’t show signs of zombification. The people they bit didn’t get infected with the zombie virus, and of course, they didn’t go berserk either.”
"The full force returned, but less than twenty people remained. Did the rest die from being bitten?" Gu Nanfeng speculated, completely taken aback. He then asked, "But Captain Qin and Captain Lin didn't go berserk?"
"Yes, it was Lao Qin and Lao Lin who helped us get the remaining dozen or so crazy people into the underground isolation room, but I didn't expect that Lao Qin and Lao Lin wouldn't come out either." Ji Yang ignored Fei Wen, who was constantly giving him signals, and told him everything he knew.
"Then how do we get to the underground isolation room?" Gu Nanfeng clearly saw Fei Wen's signal and continued to ask.
"Well..." This time, Ji Yang's words were finally interrupted by Fei Wen. "We only know that the underground isolation room is down in the underground parking garage, probably near the cold room of the city center hospital. As for how to get in, even if we tell you, it's useless. Everyone knows that you need all kinds of fingerprints and iris scans to get in."
"Let them figure that out themselves. I'll leave before 5 a.m., whether or not we've rescued them. If you want to go to the Huaxi base, get ready and wait for me in the underground parking garage." Zhang Hao stated his arrangements to himself. In any case, since they hadn't rescued anyone, he and his soldiers would have to leave before dawn. As for Lu Yuan and the others, whether they left or not was none of his concern.
“We understand.” Fei Wen said, then pulled the excited Ji Yang away from the stairwell.
