bodyguard against fate

Chapter 4 The Pure-Hearted Bodyguard

Chapter 4 The Pure-Hearted Bodyguard

Chen Ergou couldn't believe Feng Weida would be so lucky. On the day of the interview, he learned he also had to work as a bodyguard. He regretted wearing such a well-fitting suit; he couldn't even do a high kick. He said he was a third-degree black belt in Taekwondo, and Wu Renxing was quite satisfied, asking him to demonstrate. Unfortunately, Chen Ergou twisted his hip with a side kick, collapsing the chair. Wu Renxing told him to come back and wait for further notice. But while he was making kidney-tonifying soup, Feng Weida seized the opportunity.

"Brother, that position is mine. You're not going to steal my job, are you?"

"Since you knew there was a job opening, why didn't you tell me?" Feng Weida only seemed foolish, not really stupid. Chen Ergou's little scheme was exposed by him. Unable to argue back, Chen Ergou knew he was in the wrong and could only ask Feng Weida to help him inquire if the factory was hiring for any other positions. Leping Town was a tiny place, and the garment factory was the largest enterprise in the area, equivalent to Samsung or Hyundai in South Korea. As long as you could get in, even the dogs on the street would look at you with respect, not to mention that it was almost entirely filled with female workers. Finding a wife would be just around the corner!

Feng Weida kept his word and asked on Chen Ergou's behalf the next day. The answer he received was that the positions were full. Feng Weida asked if he could split his position, with himself as the driver and Chen Ergou as the bodyguard, and they would each receive half the salary.

Wu Renxing looked at Feng Weida approvingly: "Brother, one radish per hole, but you insist on squeezing two radishes into one hole. Does that mean I have to pay extra for insurance? If you hire another idiot... uh, I mean, if you hire another worker, I'll be the first to tell you!"

He Xiuli heard that many people came for the interview. She thought that those who could pass the test would be outstanding, if not one in ten thousand. But when she saw Feng Weida, she found that apart from being physically strong, he was just average and even a bit dull. She wondered if Wu Renxing had hired the wrong person.

"Don't worry, it's definitely true," Wu Renxing said in a low voice. "He trained in a top-tier special department of the state. It's full of special individuals sent directly by relatives, whose identities are kept secret. You have to submit an application just to see them. These people undergo quasi-military management and semi-permanent, closed-door mental rehabilitation training. Some people have been training there for twenty years and still haven't graduated. He went in less than a month, and all his data met the standards. Impressive, right? The most amazing thing is that ordinary people who commit murder face legal consequences, but it's nothing there. Think about it, how could someone from this unit be anything less than excellent?"

All the details Wu Renxing mentioned were true, but put together they made up a 100% pure lie.

"Is it really that amazing?"

"It can't be wrong, just trust me."

He Xiuli was completely confused.

A few days ago, He Xiuli was walking home late at night when she passed through an alley and encountered a dark figure following her. He Xiuli walked forward, and the figure walked; she stopped, and the figure stopped. Thinking she was being watched, He Xiuli was terrified and ran as fast as she could, finally escaping the alley unharmed.

When she told Wu Renxing about it, he immediately suggested she hire a bodyguard. He Xiuli, however, felt it was making a mountain out of a molehill. Leping Town had never had any major murders, and she herself had almost never encountered any danger. Looking back, she figured it was probably just a drunkard who happened to be traveling the same way. Wu Renxing, however, didn't think so. Xiuli's garment factory was one of the top private enterprises in the area, so it was understandable that others would have their eyes on it. In such cases, it's better to be safe than sorry. If they didn't prepare in advance, and something happened, it would be too late to regret it. That's why the job fair came about later.

He Xiuli has a somewhat carefree personality. Since her husband agreed, she let him do as he pleased. She had endless things to worry about at home and outside, so she focused on the big picture and didn't want to burden him with everything. Besides, she did need a driver. As for the bodyguard's role, it was dispensable. After a couple of days, if nothing else happened, no one would care anymore. Therefore, she wasn't particularly concerned about Feng Weida's background. She was just curious how someone from such a prestigious department ended up in their small department.

"I was almost driven mad by someone's scam, and my wife even ran away. Otherwise, why would I have lost all will to live?"

Wu Renxing told her that Feng Weida had been scammed by telecom fraud and was terribly cheated. Sure enough, this aroused He Xiuli's sympathy. He was middle-aged, penniless, and separated from his wife. He was extremely unfortunate. As long as he was a good person and hardworking, she should give him a chance. It would be a good deed.

Before he started his job, Wu Renxing specifically instructed Feng Weida that He Xiuli preferred quiet, so he should try to avoid chatting with her about family matters, focus on doing his job well, and avoid talking unless necessary. Because of the special nature of his position, Wu Renxing was his direct supervisor, and his salary was also paid by Wu Renxing. In short, he had complete authority over Wu Renxing's arrangements.

But Feng Weida thought differently.

Having lost his job in middle age, he was rejected by every company he interviewed with because of his age. Only Wu Renxing gave him a chance, and he felt he should repay this kindness tenfold. His responsibility was not just to protect He Xiuli, but also to catch the murderer and eliminate the threat forever! Only in this way could he live up to Wu Renxing's reputation and make him feel that he had made the right choice in choosing him.

So, besides driving for He Xiuli during the day, Feng Weida actively trained his body at night so that he could subdue the thugs if they appeared again! Fortunately, Wu Renxing provided him with a single room, so he could do whatever he wanted. Although it was an old district renovation project and a bit damp during the rainy season, that didn't matter anymore.

"By the way, why was you sent to a mental hospital by your ex-wife?" Wu Renxing asked casually during a moment of leisure.

"Let's drink," Feng Weida said.

"drink wine?"

"I don't usually drink, but I was in a bad mood that day, so I had a few drinks downstairs."

"and then?"

"And then I don't remember."

"Did you black out?"

Feng Weida: "What is a blackout?"

"It's just amnesia caused by drinking, it's not important, please continue."

"The next day I woke up to find myself lying on the floor. It looked like the house had been burgled; it was a complete mess—"

Feng Weida still remembers the look in Liu Yan's eyes, filled with fear. Liu Yan cried and begged him to stop hitting her. Feng Weida himself didn't know how he got a belt. Liu Yan's body was covered in bruises from being whipped. He didn't understand what was happening and thought a thief had broken into his house. Just then, a neighbor came over to break up the fight. He said that his family had been arguing all night and that's when he discovered that Liu Yan was covered in bruises. When he saw Feng Weida holding the belt and looking like he was about to hit her again, they quickly pinned him down and sent him to a mental hospital.

"So did you hit her or not?" Wu Renxing pressed.

"I don't remember, I have no recollection at all," Feng Weida said. "Maybe, like you said, I really blacked out. I had tests done inside, and they said I have an alcohol allergy and get drunk easily."

"I see—"

Wu Renxing feigned regret and couldn't wait to tell Jiang Xue the whole story.
