Chapter 28 Modifying Drones
Chapter 28 Modifying Drones
In order to gain uninterrupted aerial reconnaissance capabilities as soon as possible, Lorraine began modifying the gunboats after returning from the station.
Taking advantage of the last rays of the sun, two drone airfields were installed at the stern of the gunboat.
"OK, now we can always have eyes in the sky!"
Lorraine dusted off his hands, jumped onto the cargo ship, and took out two airport-compatible drones and a spare large drone from the cargo container.
As night fell, Lorraine had no choice but to put on night vision goggles and continue working, successfully docking the two small drones with the drone airport.
Lorraine took out a data cable and connected the drone airport and data board together.
After some adjustments to the data board, Lorraine successfully established a connection between the airport and the ship's intelligent system.
"Drone take off, prepare to perform test mission." Lorraine issued the command to the ship's intelligent system via the data panel.
[Received, drone taking off.]
Two drones took off into the night sky in succession, displaying two aerial images and various parameters of the drones on the data panel.
......
[Test complete, connection stable, all systems functioning normally]
"Mission complete, landing." Lorraine put away the data panel and prepared to return to the warehouse to debug the large drone.
"Why did you bring this backup machine up here?"
As soon as Lorraine arrived at the warehouse, she saw Ouyang Nian inspecting the drone he had brought up.
"We're going to equip it with a few racks so it can throw bombs."
As he spoke, Lorraine imported the blueprints for the two mounting brackets into the machining center. He then plugged in the data cable, preparing to connect the drone to the ship's intelligent system.
"What about the ammunition for throwing?"
Ouyang Nian was somewhat curious, since they didn't have any equipment suitable for aerial delivery.
Lorraine took out the four different pendants she had made and then began to make small bombs for the drones.
"Make a centrifugal unlocking fuse, then put it into the warhead of a 40mm grenade, and finally add a stabilizing tail fin to make the projectile spin."
Lorraine handed the newly made small bomb to Ouyang Nian.
"We have the equipment to produce it ourselves. On the battlefield, we can just disassemble the fuse, stick it to the activation position, and then install a tail fin to make it usable."
Lorraine shrugged. This was indeed a good fit for him, and this simple modification was only for emergency use, making it very unsuitable for long-term storage and transportation.
"What are you planning to hang on those two big, twin-mounted racks? Large bombs?"
"It's okay to hang them, but I plan to hang two simple incendiary bombs."
"Given the current flammability of zombies, incendiary bombs of the same weight are far more effective than bombs in terms of lethality."
Lorraine took out a data panel and showed Ouyang Nian the information about the giant zombie they had killed earlier.
"If nothing unexpected happens, we're about to face a bunch of rats and a swarm of beetles."
"What are you going to fill the incendiary bomb with? Will you still use fuel oil?"
"We can only use fuel oil. There are no chemical factories in this area. Otherwise, white phosphorus incendiary bombs would be a good choice against the dense horde of corpses."
While the two were talking, the processing center had already produced 11 small bombs and two slightly larger spindle-shaped bombs.
"Let's rest for now, and we'll pump out the fuel from the cargo ship tomorrow to fill the bombs."
After all, it was already dark, and if they were to extract fuel now, they would have to turn on the ship's lights.
There are too many uncertainties at the moment, so it's best to proceed cautiously to avoid unnecessary trouble.
Fortunately, after a night of investigation, Diting did not find any suspicious heat sources in the vicinity.
The first thing they did upon waking up was to extract fuel oil, which was then mixed with fibrous engineering plastics to create simple incendiary bombs.
Although its flammability and lethality are slightly less than those of napalm, it is still sufficient for temporary emergency use.
Lorraine unloaded another large drone from the cargo ship. The two men worked together to mount the two types of bombs onto the two large drones.
For security reasons, Lorraine operated two large drones loaded with bombs to conduct an armed reconnaissance of the entire route.
After confirming that there were no abnormalities in the vicinity of the route, the two, along with Di Ting and Tian Gou, headed towards the storage area to retrieve supplies.
Just in case, Lorraine also handed over two long-endurance drones with communication relay capabilities to Tiangou for control.
Upon arriving at the storage area, Di Ting was sent inside to conduct a preliminary inspection, while Tian Gou controlled a drone to take off, confirming the safety of the surrounding area and scouting the roads leading to the northern region.
After confirming that there were no abnormalities in the storage area and its surroundings, Luo Lin and Ouyang Nian entered the warehouse and began moving materials into the containers.
"Remember to take plenty of carbon fiber material; the tail fins of all the bombs are made of carbon fiber."
Lorraine said to Ouyang Nian that, in his opinion, this kind of drone-borne bomb operation would become their main method of attack in the future.
In addition to collecting large quantities of steel, carbon fiber materials, and engineering plastics, the two also collected copper and lead used to manufacture ammunition.
After filling the container, the two immediately began their return journey.
On the way back, Lorraine suddenly remembered that he could stick some steel balls to the outside of the bomb to enhance its lethality.
"I forgot about this," Lorraine said with some regret.
"I don't recommend you do that. We're facing small zombies right now, so some of the materials will be wasted."
Ouyang Nian thought for a moment and then rejected Lorraine's suggestion.
"And shouldn't we be focusing on getting the motors from the northern factory right now?"
"That's right. By the way, where should we put this box of materials?"
Since the top of the cargo hold hasn't been modified, these goods can't be stored on the cargo ship right now.
"Just park it right in the middle of those trucks."
Following Ouyang Nian's suggestion, Lorraine parked his fully loaded truck in the middle of the group of trucks.
"Tengu, take off with the drone, fly up and take a picture to mark the location of this car."
While waiting for the drone to finish taking pictures, Lorraine carried another drone onto the largest truck.
Ouyang Nian installed a flamethrower that he had placed in the car before setting off.
"Ouyang Nian, this time you might end up hanging on the side of the car."
After checking the weapons, Lorraine said somewhat apologetically.
"It was all confirmed last night, let's get ready to go."
Ouyang Nian stood on the vehicle's running board, gripping the handrail with one hand. He had modified the flamethrower the night before.
The nozzle of the flamethrower was fixed to the outside of Ouyang Nian's forearm, with the nozzle only half a meter away from Ouyang Nian's hand.
After confirming through his eyepiece that Di Ting and Tian Gou had boarded the vehicle, Lorraine stepped on the gas, and the truck moved forward along the previously determined route.
