Chapter 119 The Attack
Chapter 119 The Attack
On Sunday morning, Wei Hongsi ate breakfast in his dormitory, went downstairs, scanned a shared bicycle, and rode to the nearest "Jiangnan Bookstore" to pick up a few books.
While buying books online is convenient, he feels it's only suitable for those who already have some understanding of the book's content and have a clear goal. Furthermore, some books don't completely match the product description; he's bought so-called "authentic" complete editions that were heavily abridged and omitted on more than one occasion.
Buying books at a bookstore avoids this problem. Although the prices may be a bit higher, you can get a comprehensive understanding of the books before deciding whether to buy them.
Wei Hongsi had been browsing for over an hour and had just chosen a set of books when his cell phone in his breast pocket suddenly started vibrating repeatedly. He took out his phone, saw it was Zhang Shengyong's number, put the book on the shelf, and went outside to answer the call.
Zhang Shengyong said, "Teacher Wei, where are you right now? My supervisor has asked me to pick you up."
Wei Hongsi couldn't help but laugh: "I'm outside right now. If I'm not in a hurry, I'm going to go back to my dorm first."
"Then twenty minutes?"
"no problem."
Wei Hongsi hung up the phone, went into the bookstore, bought the set of books he had just picked out, and then rode his bike back to his dormitory. After putting the books down, he went downstairs, and Zhang Shengyong arrived in his car shortly after.
After Wei Hongsi got into the car, Zhang Shengyong gently pressed the accelerator and drove off, asking at the same time, "Did you attend a sharing session yesterday?"
"You even know that?" Wei Hongsi's interest was immediately piqued. "Was yesterday's operation arranged by the task force?"
Zhang Shengyong came to pick him up, which probably means the task force has new developments and needs his consultation. This could be good news or bad news. But if the police officers from the street police station yesterday were carrying out a task force mission, it means the case has made significant progress.
It is at least certain that the main members of the Daoguang Society in Yuecheng have been effectively controlled by the police, as this is an important prerequisite for arresting those peripheral personnel.
Zhang Shengyong didn't answer, but instead asked, "How did you end up there? Did you discover anything beforehand?"
Wei Hongsi said, "I have a colleague who has attended that sharing session several times. I heard him mention a 'round-faced girl' in it, so I wanted to go and see her."
Zhang Shengyong glanced at him: "Next time something like this happens, tell us first. Is conducting investigations your job?"
"I've only heard of a 'round-faced girl,' but there are many people with that feature. How can I explain it to you?"
"You should tell us first. In short, leave professional matters to professionals. You're responsible for using your brain, not always trying to rush ahead on your own."
"Okay, I understand." Wei Hongsi smiled, then asked, "Is there a problem with that host, Ma Xiaoli?"
Zhang Shengyong said, "The kind of sharing session you participated in yesterday, she organized several groups at the same time, and people came and went, with a total of nearly two hundred people."
"She sold these people's information to peripheral members of the Guiding Light Association for a price of one thousand yuan per person. The information included not only simple details such as names and phone numbers, but also private information such as personality descriptions, workplaces, mental states, and income levels. However, she did not know who the real buyers were."
Wei Hongsi said, "Although the total amount is not much, with such a high unit price, she should know that there is a problem."
Zhang Shengyong snorted coldly and said, "Of course she knew there was a problem. The buyer said they wanted to promote to key clients, and she believed that. As for what they were going to promote, she didn't care."
Wei Hongsi nodded silently.
This is like overpriced delivery. The original delivery fee of 100 yuan is only 300 to 500 yuan even with express delivery. However, the consignor asks for 5,000 or even 10,000 yuan. How could the delivery person not know that there is a problem?
Once the Light Guide obtains information on those individuals, they naturally list them as potential targets. When necessary, they select suitable individuals from among them and use special means to control and drive them to accomplish certain tasks.
Thinking of this, he asked, "Did Peng Jun and Li Yunxiang also come into the Light Guide Society's view in this way?"
"More or less." Zhang Shengyong nodded, "But not the kind of sharing session. There are many ways for the Light Guide to gather information."
Wei Hongsi nodded: "So their targeting of Zhiwei Technology and their creation of the BGG amusement park beverage plan was not a coincidence at all, but a carefully planned scheme."
"You're right. They first selected their target, then devised a plan, and finally chose the right people to execute it."
Zhang Shengyong said with a sigh, "We almost got led astray. What Mu Jie said before he fainted wasn't the truth at all."
Wei Hongsi asked, "Where is the investigation at now?"
Zhang Shengyong said, "Don't ask me. First, there are some things that are inconvenient for me to say, and second, there are many things I don't know either. Go ask our leader later!"
"Alright then," Wei Hongsi said, and didn't ask any more questions.
He wasn't actually interested in the details of the case investigation; rather, he wanted to know if they had uncovered the more crucial information about the guiding light, as this was related to the completion of the "system's" mission. What that crucial information was, however, was not his primary concern.
When Wei Hongsi arrived at the Municipal Criminal Investigation Corps, he was already familiar with the place, but Zhang Shengyong still escorted him to the command room before leaving.
Only Director Liang and Director Shi were in the room. When they saw Wei Hongsi, they both stood up with smiles to greet him.
"Professor Wei!" Director Liang said, shaking hands with Wei Hongsi, "The ideas you provided last time played a crucial role and were key to this major breakthrough. We all need to thank you!"
"Director Liang, you flatter me. This is what I should do," Wei Hongsi said with a smile.
The two times I met Director Liang, his brows were always furrowed with a sense of solemnity, but now they were relaxed, and he looked much more at ease.
Director Shi shook hands with Wei Hongsi and said with a smile, "Thank you, Teacher Wei, but there are a few things I need to trouble you with this time."
"If there's anything I can do, Director Shi, please let me know."
Seeing the mental state of the two leaders, Wei Hongsi knew that the investigation of the case was progressing smoothly, and even if there were still some problems, they would not affect the overall situation.
The three sat down, and Director Shi first gave Wei Hongsi a general overview of the case's progress.
As a special advisor to the task force, Wei Hongsi should be informed of many things. Since the idea came from him, there should naturally be follow-up feedback, which is directly related to the next steps.
When Director Shi told him that "Round Face" and "Student" were actually two different people, Wei Hongsi was also surprised. He then realized that he had been misled by Mu Jie's four consecutive dream narratives.
Upon hearing from Director Shi that a female elder (Matriarch) had emerged and that she had been identified as a core member of the Guiding Light Society overseas, Wei Hongsi couldn't help but feel excited.
Having reached this point, there's no reason why the "system" task shouldn't be completed yet, right?
